Abu Al Zuluf: Where Identity Meets Experience

HOSPITALITY | CONCEPTUAL BRANDING

Abu Al Zuluf is more than a pub in the historic neighborhoods of Damascus: it is a living story. Before this transformation, the venue lacked a cohesive identity, existing only as a simple pictogram with no narrative connection to the guests.

I reimagined the brand and the physical space as a single, unified experience, turning a local venue into a mythic destination.

02 | The Character Study

Designing a Narrative: Who is Abu Al Zuluf?
Rather than a typical redesign, I built a character-driven world. We defined Abu Al Zuluf as a mythical warrior who chose to trade his sword for a flute, spreading music and connection.

This legend became the foundation for every visual and spatial decision. Every detail was designed to answer one question: How does this celebrate the spirit of the character?

03 | Spatial Transformation

Engineering Social Interaction
The physical transformation focused on balancing atmosphere with commercial reality. By introducing a communal bar and a strategic new layout, we doubled the seating capacity while enhancing the social flow.

Materials were selected for their ability to withstand the elements while maintaining a raw, authentic texture that feels integrated into the historic surroundings.

04 | Storytelling

Narrative at Every Touchpoint
To embed the story into the guest experience, I developed a series of illustrations depicting Abu Al Zuluf's adventures.
From over forty conceptual scenes, a curated selection was fired into custom ceramic tabletops. This ensures that guests don't just sit at a table: they engage with a specific chapter of the brand's mythology while they dine.

05 | Atmosphere & Engagement

Sculpting with Light and Nature
The emotional resonance of Abu Al Zuluf is defined by its evening atmosphere. We meticulously designed the lighting and environmental details to shift the mood as the sun sets.

By integrating olive trees—a symbol of the region’s heritage—and pairing them with subtle, warm lighting, we created an immersive sanctuary within the city. This strategy naturally invites guests to linger and capture moments, turning every visitor into an organic brand ambassador.

By scattering different narrative illustrations throughout the venue, we encouraged a specific guest behavior: exploration. Visitors are naturally drawn to move through the space to "read" the different tables, fostering curiosity and organic social interaction. The space is not just built: it is narrated.

07 | Shanata (The Expansion)

ARCHITECTURAL REINVENTION | LATAKIA, SYRIA

Following the success of Abu Al Zuluf, I was commissioned to lead the transformation of Shanata, a 700 sqm historic venue in Latakia. The challenge was to restore the dignity of a space that had once hosted legendary cultural performances but had since faded into a low-end cafeteria. This was a project of reinvention at scale.

08 | Architectural Strategy

The strategy for Shanata focused on high-impact interventions using material intelligence. I replaced visual noise and low-quality advertising with a black stone façade inspired by fortress architecture, giving the venue a landmark presence.

Inside, I introduced a sophisticated blend of wood, stone, and controlled lighting to reclaim the space's historic prestige while providing a modern, refined atmosphere.

09 | The Philosophy

Spaces are Narrated
Across both projects, the work demonstrates that spaces are more than physical structures: they are vessels for storytelling. By integrating brand identity into the very fabric of the architecture, we created destinations that people don't just visit, but experience and remember.
